A Change is at Hand

Fellow citizens of the world, brothers and sisters in Christ, All Hail,

This is the first time I am writing, without preparation, directly to FatherHurley.com. This is a change for me, as I am very particular and picky. However, a change is at hand.

When Father Hurley started the Universal Hagar’s Spiritual Association (as it was known then), a change was at hand. Racial and social injustice was openly devastating the United States and the world. Father Hurley, and his contemporaries, knew something had to change. They each went in different directions, seeking God, having faith they would find a righteous end.

Today, the world still suffers under racial and social injustices, though many practices are now hidden. The same spirit of determination that drove Father Hurley, and his contemporaries, is available today. It is easy to point out the ills of the world, and they need to be pointed out, for the majority (it seems) have their heads buried in the sand of indifference. But the real work is in identifying the solution, once the problem is pointed out.

God has given each of us a piece of the solution. What solution? The solution to all problems. Rev. Lester Osby said it best in our Pleasant Sunday service last week, here in Detroit, “We are problem solvers.” The God that knows all obviously has the solution. Unfortunately, none of us can handle infinite wisdom. Therefore, each of us must find our part of the solution.

The only way the full solution can be found is by letting God use us. In Pleasant Sunday, I felt like a good ol’ preacher. For a few moments, I yelled, screamed, preached, ran out the pulpit, even did a quick dance. I am saying this for a reason. I do not feel comfortable when the spirit carries me in this way.

Saints, maybe we cannot find the solution, because we are unwilling to make the flesh uncomfortable. Forget what makes you (flesh) comfortable! How best can God use you? I can hear the old saying, “Let Go, Let God.” I have spent my whole life trying to suppress the spirit within me, to no avail. I am not the only one guilty. What gift are you holding back? Your vision, your dreams, may be the missing ingredient to the solution the world needs.

Join me in a vow to God, say it along with me, “Father, I know you made me in your image. I realize that I am your representative on this earth plane. I place myself in your hands. Mold me and make me whatever you want me to be. Help me overcome evil desires. Help me to be moderate with natural desires. I am your child. I am your servant. Amen. Amen. Amen.”

I hope you joined me in that vow. Peace and joy to all.

I have the honor to be your obedient servant,
Reverend George H. Latimer-Knight
