Reflections on the 40 Day Fast (part 1)

On yesterday, we in the Universal Hagar’s Spiritual Church ended our 40 day fast, which is called every seven years. This was the most powerful 40 day fast I’ve experienced. At first, I hesitated to frame it this way but the spirit impressed me that this is how it should be. Every round goes higher and higher. From increased mental clarity to moderate weight loss to a smaller waistline to increased spiritual power—I have nothing but good things to say.

This 40 day fast reminds me of the one in 2005. After that fast, I consciously “took the fast with me.” That is, I kept up a healthier diet for more than six months. When the fast ended yesterday, I had no cravings for my usual unhealthy treats. In fact I vowed, for the remainder of the year, to only eat dessert on my birthday next month, and two days each for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

Spiritually, my strength has been renewed. Several stress-inducing incidents occurred during the fast. My normal response would be to overeat either ice cream, cake, or chips as a coping mechanism. But since the fast was going on, I pushed through those temptations. By not turning to my comfort foods, my mind forced me to face the issues head-on. So, the situations cleared up quicker because I actually dealt with them.

That’s all I’ll share for now. But there’s more to come. May God richly bless you. May peace and love abide.

Your obedient servant,
Rev. George H. Latimer-Knight, J.D.
