Barack Obama Presumptive Democratic Nominee: The Change We Need

YouTube Preview Image
I just can’t believe it! I know that to speak is to create. I know the thought of a thing is the prophecy of its fulfillment. I know race relations have improvements over the last few decades. But to see a BLACK MAN be the nominee of one the major U.S. political parties is sending electrical charges throughout my body. GLORY! I am watching Obama’s historic speech in Saint Paul, Minnesota as I type this. [Running and jumping around in my bedroom.]

“Tonight we mark the end to one historic journey with the beginning of another.” Obama is such an eloquent and intelligent man. We all should be proud tonight that we have two powerful politicians running for office. There are stark and clear differences between the policies of Barack Obama and John McCain. I look forward to the debates! I believe they will be modern day versions of the Lincoln-Douglas debates.

Politics and religion do mix. They mix because they are both a part of the public square. We cannot be afraid of laying out the sound gospel principles. The Christ principles are pragmatic and can guide politics to ideas that will uplift the fallen humanity. The fallen humanity MUST be uplifted individually, collectively, religiously, politically, governmentally. Let the people say, “Amen.”

This is history. I thank God I am alive in these years, to see this history unfolding before my eyes. Obama is so right, “This is our time!” Saints and friends, this is our time. Its Our Time to Shine.

Barack Obama Wins Iowa Caucuses

I am happy to see this day! What day? The day when Father Hurley’s prophecies continue to be fulfilled. Father told us that the black would rise above all the injusticies done to him and recapture his right place in life. Oh saints and friends don’t you see what happened in Iowa last night? On CNN last night Roland Martin said it best.

Jesse Jackson ran, essentially, a black campaign during his Presidental run in 1984 and 1988. Obama is running a Presidental campaign, period. The Senator is reaching out beyond all barriers. Iowa is 92% white. (1, 2, 3) No matter the future results, Iowa shows that Obama is a more than viable candidate. To the world, I believe, it will show we are not as racist as we appear. There is much racism in America, but we see in Iowa a number of whites who looked beyond race. What a joy! More commentary to come. Peace until then.

Barack Obama Running for President

I am happy Barack Obama is running for President. I plan on watching his campaign closely. Also, I will be examining Senator Obama’s platform. Each of you need to take a serious look at all the candidates. DO NOT let the talking heads on television tell you who to vote for. Think for yourself. We see what happens when people vote on pure emotion, and propaganda. Let us vote on reason. Let us become strong political thinkers.

Some of you think you do not have time to do some study of politics and the politicians. However, consider the great power the political realm has over us. After you consider it, you will see you cannot afford to take politics lightly.

Thoughts on the Richard Dawkins talk on his book The God Delusion

To my brothers and sisters, Peace and Love,

Brother Ryan Adams sent a video over the University of Detroit Mercy (UDM) Agora email list. In it Richard Dawkins was giving a talk in Lynchberg, Virginia, concerning his book The God Delusion. Several thoughts came as I watched the video.

1) Dawkins believes that if one is intelligent and educated that they will no longer believe in God. He further asserts that there are many atheists and agnostics in the closet in America. Is this really the case? Since I am a minister, does this automatically make me unintelligent and ignorant? I know I received a high-level education at UDM. In addition, there may be many theists in the closet in the scientific community.

2) Dawkins says that atheists and homosexuals are the last two unelectable groups in America. He states that Blacks, women, Jews, etc. are well accepted in American politics. Well, is this the case? It is true, there have been Blacks in congress. However, there have never been more than one Black in the U.S. Senate at any given time in history. Also, “when the 110th Congress first convened, Democrat Nancy Pelosi became the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House, Keith Ellison became the first Muslim in Congress, and Mazie Hirono and Hank Johnson became the first Buddhists in Congress.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/110th_United_States_Congress) There has never been a Black, Women, Buddhist, Hindu, or Atheist president. I think he oversimplifies in trying to say everyone is free in American politics, expect atheists and homosexuals.

3) I think Dawkins and the majority audience had too much fun putting down Liberty University.

4) This video reminded me of my time in Wayne State’s graduate philosophy program. All the full-time professors were atheists (well, one I was not sure about). They made it there business, in everyone of their courses, to denounce religion as folly. Several of them said they always take time to refute the existence of God in their introduction to philosophy courses. My problem: tearing down and taking away is one thing, but where is the building. This is just as true for the theist.

5) We must all, in my opinion, adhere in some fashion to Matthew 25:35-40, where Christ charges us to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, house the stranger (homeless), clothe the naked, visit the sick, and uplift the prisoner. Atheists, Agnostics, and Theists are all at fault for the condition of the world. There is surely room for the philosophical underpinnings Matthew 25:35-40 in all camps.

6) If atheists do want a stronger position in America they must organize around the afore stated verses. In the aftermaths of Katrina, I remember it being commented that religious organizations flocked to the rescue, while the government was very slow, and atheistic organizations were not seen. Dawkins said that atheists are too intelligent to be herded (organized). If this is so, then they will never gain power, for there is power in organization and leadership.

I hope all of you receive something positive from these six thoughts.

I will not get political right now. However, I am excited about Senator Obama possibly running for the office of President of the United States. He has his critics. Personally, I will listen to all sides before making any judgements. One thing is clear though, this country NEEDS a change. If we want a different body of politics, then we need different bodies in politics. We, the people, can make this happen by supporting those kind of politicians. Senator Obama may be among them, but let us come to our own conclusions, and not let the pundits (left, right, or otherwise) tell us what to think. Amen.
